We consider both mode calculations and time-evolutions of axial r modes for relativistic uniformly rotating non-barotropic neutron stars, using the slow-rotation formalism, in which rotational corrections are considered up to linear order in the angular velocity Ω. We study various stellar models, such as uniform density models, polytropic models with different polytropic indices n , and some models based on realistic equations of state. For weakly relativistic uniform density models and polytropes with small values of n , we can recover the growth times predicted from Newtonian theory when standard multipole formulae for the gravitational radiation are used. However, for more compact models, we find that relativistic linear perturbation theory predicts a weakening of the instability compared to the Newtonian results. When turning to polytropic equations of state, we find that for certain ranges of the polytropic index n , the r mode disappears, and instead of a growth, the time-evolutions show a rapid decay of the amplitude. This is clearly at variance with the Newtonian predictions. It is, however, fully consistent with our previous results obtained in the low-frequency approximation.  相似文献

In this paper, an experimental micromechanical study is presented investigating the contact mechanics and tribological behaviour of highly/completely decomposed tuff granules. The parent material was taken from two locations—named the top and bottom—from a recent landslide in Hong Kong, and in this study the tested granules were obtained from the parent material after drying and sieving processes. Basic material characterisation was conducted quantifying the particle shape, the surface roughness and the strength of a set of grains. A set of twenty-nine monotonic inter-particle shearing tests were conducted on pairs of granules taken from the top and bottom of the landslide. It was found that the granules had very high friction angles at their contacts, in general greater in comparison with other materials reported in the literature. The slightly greater inter-particle friction for the granules taken from the top of the landslide might be because of their higher roughness in comparison with the ones from the bottom. Additional experiments were conducted to investigate the normal and tangential load–displacement response of the granules subjected to cyclic loading. A good curve fitting for the normal load–displacement response could be obtained by using very low apparent Young’s moduli in the Hertzian model. In general, the decomposed tuff granules showed significant plastic response during the first normal load cycle, and this plastic behaviour continued for the subsequent third and fourth cycles. In the cyclic inter-particle shearing tests, the nonlinearity and hysteresis increased for larger cyclic displacements, but the effect of the number of shearing cycles on the energy loss was generally small. Finally, a limited discussion is presented on the applicability of a theoretical model on the tangential load–displacement behaviour of the granules.  相似文献

This paper presents the findings of risk identification and risk perception research conducted in relation to the fisheries systems of four distinct and diverse European countries: Faroes, Iceland, Greece and the UK. Risk research traditionally attempts to quantify the potential threat or consequences from a range of risk events or hazards. This research, however, adopted a social sciences perspective and so assumed that a risk event or hazard can mean different things to different people and that these perceptions are also context and culturally dependent. Risk perceptions were examined and risk registers developed in each country for a range of stakeholder groups. A ‘mental modelling’ approach was adopted in a series of qualitative interviews. Findings were examined in terms of a wide range of psychological, social and cultural risk theories. Differences in risk perceptions were noted between stakeholder groups and countries and contextual influences were examined such as the widely differing fisheries management systems used in each country. This research provides one of the first attempts to systematically evaluate risks and perceptions across a range of fisheries-systems. The findings support social science theories which argue that risk is a subjective, as opposed to objective, concept and that this subjectivity will therefore affect our attempts to assess and manage those hazards we think we can potentially influence or control.  相似文献

Seismic risk of circum-pacific earthquakes I. Strain energy release   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Commonly used earthquake “whole process” frequency - magnitude and strain energy - magnitude laws are merged to obtain an analytic expression for an upper bound magnitude to regional earthquake occurrenceM 3, which is expressed primarily in terms of the annual maximum magnitudeM 1 and the magnitude equivalent of the annual average total strain energy releaseM 2. Values ofM 3 are also estimated graphically from cumulative strain energy release diagrams. Both methods are illustrated by application to the high seismicity of the circum-Pacific belt, using Duda’s (1965) data and regionalisation. Values ofM 3 obtained analytically, with their uncertainties, are in agreement with those obtained graphically. Empirical relations are then obtained betweenM 1,M 2, andM 3, which could be of general assistance in regional seismic risk considerations if they are found to be of a universal nature. For instance.M 3 andM 2 differ by one magnitude unit in subregions of the circum-Pacific.  相似文献

Studies of operational pollution carried out by European commission - Joint Research Centre in the Mediterranean Sea for the years 1999-2004 are briefly introduced. The specific analysis of the Adriatic Sea for the same period demonstrates that this area has been characterized by a relevant number of illegal discharges from ships. After setting the historical background of the project AESOP (aerial and satellite surveillance of operational pollution in the Adriatic Sea), the content, partners and aim of the project are presented. Finally, the results of the first phase of the AESOP project are presented. The results seem very encouraging. For the first time in the Adriatic, real time detection of oil spills in satellite images and an immediate verification by the Coast Guard has been undertaken. An exploratory activity has also been carried out in collaboration with the University of Ljubljana to use automatic information system (AIS) to identify the ships detected in the satellite images.  相似文献

We investigate the damping of neutron star r modes due to the presence of a viscous boundary (Ekman) layer at the interface between the crust and the core. Our study is motivated by the possibility that the gravitational wave driven instability of the inertial r modes may become active in rapidly spinning neutron stars, for example, in low-mass X-ray binaries, and the fact that a viscous Ekman layer at the core–crust interface provides an efficient damping mechanism for these oscillations. We review various approaches to the problem and carry out an analytic calculation of the effects due to the Ekman layer for a rigid crust. Our analytic estimates support previous numerical results, and provide further insight into the intricacies of the problem. We add to previous work by discussing the effect that compressibility and composition stratification have on the boundary-layer damping. We show that, while stratification is unimportant for the r-mode problem, composition suppresses the damping rate by about a factor of 2 (depending on the detailed equation of state).  相似文献

A catalogue of seismicity in Greece and adjacent areas   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Summary. A new earthquake catalogue for Greece has been formed to cover the instrumental period 1901–78, in particular 605 earthquakes for the period 1917–63 inclusive are relocated using first arrival data from the International Seismological Summary. These relocations incorporate macro-seismically and other well-controlled master events into an ensuing joint epicentre determination technique. The largest annual average shift is 165 km for 78 earthquakes during the decade after 1917, decreasing to 17 km for the later years 1957–63. Magnitudes are redetermined mainly using readings from the Swedish network and Uppsala since as early as 1908. Catalogue completeness exists for magnitudes around 5.5 for at least the last 60 years, but magnitudes of about 4.7 are completely reported only during the most recent 15 years.
The new epicentral positions lead to a better delineation of the seismic zones than has previously been achieved. The majority of shallow earthquakes are contained in a belt parallel to the Hellenic Arc which extends north into Albania, in the south-east the epicentral locations give a more diffuse extension of this zone into the west coast of Turkey. Depths of intermediate earthquakes along the Hellenic Arc tend to relocate to shallower depths, in the south-west part of Crete no earthquake focus deeper than 100 km is found, although in the south-eastern section of the arc a tendency to increased depths is observed. A second zone starts at Leukas Island in the west and extends through central Greece to near Volos on the east coast, where it divides into two branches, which are less well defined, but which eventually join the seismicity of western Turkey. A third zone follows the Saronikos and Corinth gulfs.  相似文献
